Brilliant hosts
The owners showed us round Derinkuyu themselves. Their knowledge is extraordinary. The villa is a proper haven after a day of hiking and caves.

A carefully restored three-bedroom cave villa cut into a volcanic cliff on the edge of Ürgüp, with views over the town and vineyards beyond. Sleeps six across three cave-room bedrooms (two kings, one twin), all with en-suite walk-in showers. A small stone-walled terrace pool (5 × 2m), shaded by a vine-covered pergola. Outdoor wood-fired fireplace and a small tandoor oven (provisions and instructions provided). Separate dining terrace with a wrought-iron table seating eight. Panoramic view of Ürgüp's cave houses and the surrounding vineyards. Interior retains the original cave rooms carefully restored by a local stone mason, with contemporary comforts added. Vaulted stone-carved living room with a wood burner. Underfloor heating throughout (the rock is naturally cool in summer and brisk in spring). Kitchen is a modern fit-out (induction hob, electric oven, dishwasher, espresso machine) in the former grain store. An extensive private library covers Cappadocian archaeology, Byzantine art, and local viticulture. Additional features: WiFi, washing machine, air handling, hairdryers, premium linens. Welcome pack includes local Öküzgözü wine and fresh simit. Parking at the foot of the property (short stone staircase up). Not suitable for guests with mobility issues. Ideal for history-minded travellers.
Ürgüp town centre is a 5-minute walk — cafés, wine cellars (Turasan and Kocabağ are worth a visit), and small boutiques. Derinkuyu underground city is 40 minutes by car — one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in central Turkey. Göreme is 15 minutes away for additional dinner options. Nevşehir airport is 30 minutes.

The underfloor heating was a surprise in October — very welcome. The rock is genuinely cool in August.

Loved everything but need to say Ürgüp is a small town — for dinner options we drove into Göreme twice. Worth the 15 minutes for more variety.

Cave villa, archaeology-minded owners, balloons at dawn, good local wine at dinner. A holiday that reminds you why you travel.
